Proverbs for When You’re Sheltered-in-Place

Proverbs for When You’re Sheltered-in-Place

Solomon has given us all much to chew on for over two millennia. Even now when we are in isolation, quarantine, shelter-in-place, or whatever you want to call it, his by-inspiration inspirational quotes still are speaking truth in the book of Proverbs.

Here are some lessons to think deeply about for those who are feeling the effects of 4+ weeks at home:

“The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, and his glory is to overlook a transgression” (Prov. 19:11). Instead of blowing up at others in your frustration, spend time thinking about the love and grace of God in your life.

“He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, and He will pay back what he has given” (Prov. 19:17). The time seems to be rapidly approaching where we ourselves might be in want. Share and show compassion on others now, knowing that the Lord will care for us.

It is honorable for a man to stop striving, since any fool can start a quarrel” (Prov. 20:3). Submission to one another and sincere service and love need to be exercised especially as the days continue to bring new challenges and old wounds!

“Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles” (Prov. 21:23). Sometimes the best thing to do is NOT SAY IT! This includes on social media!

“The lazy man says, ‘there is a lion outside! I shall be slain in the streets!’” (Prov. 22:13). Don’t let the coronavirus keep you from doing what you know you need to get done!

“Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge” (Prov. 23:12). Look forward to the times of worship and study and realize that fishers of men need time to mend their nets. Use this opportunity!

“If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small” (Prov. 24:10). We like to think ourselves to be strong, but trials like this prove what is already there…or not. Draw strength from the word of God. Let’s make it through this—Stronger in the Lord!
