How Sweet, How Heavenly -written by Joseph Swain

How Sweet, How Heavenly -written by Joseph Swain

How sweet, how heavenly is the sight,

When those that love the Lord

In one another’s peace delight,

And so fulfill His Word!

When each can feel his brother’s sigh

And with him bear a part!

When sorrow flows from eye to eye,

And joy from heart to heart!

When, free from envy, scorn, and pride,

Our wishes all above,

Each can his brother’s failings hide,

And show a brother’s love!

When love, in one delightful stream,

Through every bosom flows,

When union sweet, and dear esteem,

In every action glows.

Love is the golden chain that binds

The happy souls above;

And he’s an heir of Heaven who finds

His bosom glow with love.

I loved this song as a boy, but I have developed an even greater appreciation for its sentiment as I have matured and discovered that only the love of God can make this “sweet and heavenly sight” a reality in my life!

Satan certainly seeks to sow “envy, scorn and pride” among us. But we do not choose to serve Satan and his schemes! We allow the Spirit of God to sow “sweet union and dear esteem through every action” of our hearts!

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (1 John 4: 7-11)
