Events unfolding this past week reminded me of something that happened when our children were very young. Our four-year old son was sitting down to eat his breakfast. As we bowed to pray to God, he asked God to help his cough get better and to help his sister get well and not have fever anymore.
Then it happened! What we have all thought but perhaps were hesitant to pray. At the very least, what we have all wanted to say…
“And God, could you do it quickly.”
Do we still have that faith and trust? Do we still believe that God hears and cares? Do we still love to talk to God?
We all want God to act on our behalf – right now!
As we mature in Christ, we come to understand more fully that God’s timetable and God’s agenda are not always the same as our own. We understand that “the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom” (1 Corinthians 1:25). We grow to have confidence that “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).
This does not mean, however, that we should not ask God the desires of our heart. James 4:2 says, “You do not have because you do not ask.” Prayer is powerful! Prayer is effective! God hears our prayers!
What beautiful lessons we can learn from our children! Trust God! Tell Him what is on your heart! Let Him do “exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” (Ephesians 3:20).
To Him be the glory!
